SBA Promotes Programs for Vets Who Are Business Owners

Maine – YARMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Representatives from the Small Business Administration are in Maine this week, trying to spread the word about programs that can help veterans start or grow their businesses.

The SBA presented an award to Peter and Susan McVety. Their business, McVety’s Hearth and Home in Yarmouth, has been named the SBA Maine Veteran Owned Business of the Year.

Administrators with the SBA say that veterans own about 10 percent of small businesses across the U.S., but many are not aware that the government offers a lot of programs just for vets.

Rhett Jeppson, the SBA Associate Administrator for Veterans Business Development, said, “You can have the best programs in the world, but if the veterans don’t know about it, they can’t take advantage of it. And we need to do a better job at that.”
